Custom builds
An expedition truck on its way across Africa, a wolf under the lacquer, a gold chassis, and one that is a joke on purpose. If it can be drawn, it can usually be made, and it gets made here.
The builds
01
Explorer Edition
Designed and built by STC, and now making its way across Africa on safari.
Based on the L200 with the cab modified for access to the rear sleeper unit. The body is cut, folded and welded from lightweight aluminium here in the workshop, then lifted, with everything from the gear linkages to the fuel lines extended to suit. Competition-grade off-road differentials and gearbox, locking hubs and a reinforced chassis. Front and rear 7 ton winches, a 360 degree camera system, a full electrical overhaul with heavy-duty cables, extra chargers and a battery management computer. Fitted with beds for off-grid camping, or set up to carry supplies where they are needed. The camper truck was £44,995 as built; other specifications are priced per build.
02
Wolf Edition
A customer wanted something nobody else had.
Silver over black, with the wolf airbrushed through the paint rather than stuck on, so it sits under the lacquer and will still be there in ten years. A pair of eyes on the bonnet, another pair across the tailgate, a bull bar and light bar on the front, a snorkel, and the usual STC rebuild underneath it all. Badged Wolf Edition, 1 of 1, and it is.
03
Fall Guy Edition
Stripped to the last bolt. The chassis came out, went away to be coated, and came back gold.
Then every arm, damper, hub and brake went on new before the body went near it. The interior was trimmed in tan leather to match, and the truck went out in gold over tan, in the colours of the one on the television. It is the most complete build the workshop does: nothing on it is original except the idea.
04
Apocalypse Edition
Built for the end of the world, or a wet weekend in Wales, whichever comes first.
Bright red over black, lifted on pro steels and mud terrains, with a roof rack, snorkel, bull bar and a cream leather interior that suggests the owner intends to survive in some comfort. A daily driver that happens to be able to leave the road when the road runs out.
05
Inbred Edition
Keeps it in the family.
A single cab in matte black, sitting on the same lift, wheels and tyres as its more respectable relatives, with the name on the tub for anyone who asks. Built for a customer with a sense of humour, and photographed in the workshop at night because it prefers it that way. Everything on it is related to everything else, which is more than can be said for the owner’s family tree. It runs perfectly. The joke is doing less well.
Beyond the road
Armoured
STC has developed a fully armoured L200 for humanitarian and tactical use: a reinforced armoured passenger compartment and solid off-road tyre technology, so it keeps going where it is sent. The Explorer platform can be upgraded with the same armour plating.
Expedition and aid
The Explorer body doubles as a supply truck. Fitted with beds for off-grid travel, or stripped and racked for delivering supplies in places without roads. Winches front and rear, cameras all round, and power to spare.
Paint, graphics and lighting
One truck went out with gold metal flake in the paint. Others carry a name on the tub or a colour nobody else has. Under-body and interior LED lighting, light bars and work lights, fitted and wired on their own circuits. If it can be drawn, it can usually be made.
Describe it. We will tell you what it takes.
Ring and tell us what you want the truck to do and what it should look like. A sketch on the back of an envelope is fine.
What is possible, what it involves, and what it costs, broken down by job. Priced per build, nothing off a menu.
Yours, or one we source. Either way it is stripped to the shell and rebuilt before anything custom goes on.
Progress photographs as it goes. It leaves with a written record of everything done to it.
Every build on this page started as a phone call and a description. Ring, tell us what you have in mind, and we will tell you straight what it takes.
